phrase is, “to act your age.”

In this post, I want to talk about a cool phrase you can use. The phrase is, “to act your age.” Okay, so “to act” means “to behave.” It’s what you do. It’s how you live. So, to “act your age” means to act or behave how a normal person your age would act.

So, imagine a three-year old... How does a three-year old act? A three-year old cries, they scream, things like that. And how does a fifteen-year old act? Well, a fifteen-year old may have his own problems, but he doesn’t normally cry and scream like a three-year old.

So, if a fifteen-year old starts crying and screaming because he wants something, you could say, “Hey, act your age!” – which means, “Don’t act like a three-year old. Act like a fifteen-year old.”

We can also use this for adults. It’s normal for a fifteen-year old or a twenty-year old to play video games, right? Maybe spend several hours a day or all day playing video games. But it’s not normal for a forty-year old man to spend the day playing video games. So, if there is a forty-year old man playing video games all day, his wife could say, “Act your age!”

You can say, “Act your age” when you’re talking to someone or if you’re talking about somebody. You could say, “He doesn’t act his age.” “She doesn’t act her age.”
