Fuel cell technology, in which hydrogen fuel is converted into electricity to power an automobile, is not new.Several car companies have been experimenting with these zero-emission powertrains for years and Hyundai has been developed its own fuel-cell technology since 2000.The Tucson Fuel Cell was announced at the Paris Motor Show in September 2012 and was known as the ix35 Fuel Cell.Now, its first low-volume production hydrogen car, built Tucson assembly line in South Korea.Hyundai Motors America Says the company thinks to build and sell approximately 1,000 Tucson Fuel Cells over the next two years.The hydrogen Hyundai uses the European ix35 grille and front fascia giving different appearance to the gasoline Tucson.Behind the wheel, it's a very pleasant, quiet, electrically-driven crossover that is alternatively powered.Hyundai fuel cell stack operates at close atmospheric pressure.According to Hyundai, the Tucson Fuel Cell can be refueled in fewer than 10 minutes, provides a driving range of up to 300 miles.Front wheels are driven by a 100-kilowatt or134 horsepower electric motor with 221 lb-ft of torque and Hyundai has included the lithium-ion battery pack to provide extra assist when maximum power is required.The standard Hyundai Tucson comes with a 182 hp 2.4 liter four cylinder engine.The new 2015 Tucson Fuel Cell enters production in February of 2014.
